Paul Johnson has been practicing before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since 2006 and is also licensed in Utah and Arizona.  Because of the federal nature of intellectual property law Paul can assist clients in all states with patent examination and registration, federal trademark examination and registration, and federal copyright examination and registration.  Through a network of foreign counsel Paul can also assist clients with patent, trademark, and copyright matters in any foreign country and can manage your global intellectual property portfolio.
Paul is a native of Phoenix, Arizona and relocated to Salt Lake City in 2015. He is a three-time graduate of Arizona State University, receiving his BSE and MSE in materials science engineering and then his law degree from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU, where he graduated cum laude. During law school, he served as an articles editor for Jurimetrics: the Journal of Law, Science, and Technology, reviewing articles to determine their potential for publication and guiding authors through necessary revisions. He was a Pedrick Scholar, received an academic scholarship, was a recipient of the Law Science & Technology Certificate in intellectual property, and was a two-time CALI Award recipient for the highest grades in Patent Law and Public International Law.Prior to beginning law school, Paul worked at Honeywell International and at Able Engineering and Component Services, both in roles working on aftermarket repair of aircraft engine components. He passed the patent bar exam during his first month of law school and began working soon thereafter as a patent agent until close to his graduation from law school. After law school he served as a postgraduate fellow for ASU’s Innovation Advancement Program supervising law, engineering, and business students in providing local entrepreneurs with reduced rate business and legal services. He also served as a research associate under Dean Paul S. Berman of the ASU law school assisting in the preparation of an amicus brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court and with various other journal articles and memoranda.  From 2010-2016 Paul practiced intellectual property law at an Arizona-based law firm.Paul assists clients with U.S. patent, trademark, and copyright prosecution; management of international patent and trademark prosecution; intellectual property contracts, assignments, and licensing; patentability and trademark registrability opinions; patent and trademark infringement analyses and early stage strategy; Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) processes to protect trademark owners from those trying to register confusingly similar domain names; and other intellectual property related matters.Paul has drafted patents in the areas of mechanical engineering (including very simple to very complex mechanical devices), materials science, cosmetic devices and various consumer goods, semiconductor devices/packages and processes, integrated circuits, computer science, optics, business methods, software (including smart device apps and database software), biotechnology, weapons systems, electronics, and many others. Paul has worked with clients in Utah in and around the Salt Lake City south to the Utah Valley and north to the Ogden area. Due to the federal nature of patent and trademark, law, Paul has several clients in other states as well.
Paul became fluent in Spanish from a two-year mission he served in Argentina after high school.
