Gil Carey is an attorney and certified public accountant who practices in the areas of Taxation, Business Law and Estate Planning. Mr. Carey is a business and tax law attorney with years of experience solving business, tax and legal challenges for middle-market, closely-held businesses and their owners.
Mr. Carey advises businesses on tax and transactional matters and counsels business owners on the development of business succession strategies as part of a comprehensive estate and wealth preservation plan. He regularly provides estate planning, probate and estate administration services. Mr. Carey also advises on tax matters, including business, trusts, estates and personal income taxation; and represents clients in tax disputes with state and federal tax agencies and in the U.S. Tax Court.
Mr. Carey has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at Albany Law School since 2002 and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Learning Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Prior to forming Rivera Carey, PLLC, Mr. Carey was engaged in the practice of law with prominent law firms in the Albany area where he worked on various estate planning, business law, taxation and commercial litigation matters.
Before attending law school, he worked as a Senior Tax Consultant in the Boston and Albany offices of PricewaterhouseCoopers where he advised closely-held and middle-market companies on a wide array of tax matters. Mr. Carey is a licensed certified public accountant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Mr. Carey is an Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. He previously served as an Administrative Law Attorney with the 412th Theater Engineer Command in Vicksburg, MS and as the Chief Trial Counsel for the 411th Engineer Brigade during the unit’s deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Chief Trial Counsel, Mr. Carey was responsible for the administration of Military Justice within the Brigade, to include the prosecution of all courts-martial and administrative hearings, and provided guidance to Commanders within the Brigade on the Rules of Engagement and the Law of Armed Conflict. Previously, Mr. Carey was Company Commander of the Headquarters Company, 411th Engineer Brigade.
