She is a past member of the New York City Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution and Children and the Law Committees, as well as the Family and Divorce Mediation Council of Greater New York. Lara is also on the Board of Directors of the Townsend Harris High School Alumni Association, and was previously on the Board of Directors of COJECO (Council of Jewish Emigre Community Organizations).

Before pursuing her mediation career, Lara worked with the Zamir Choral Foundation. In addition to conducting a HaZamir chapter, Lara sang as a soprano and soloist with the Zamir Chorale, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
